The Story of George Washington by Patricia A. Pingry

George Washington is often referred to as the father of our nation. Before he was the first president of the United States, he was the leader of the American army and led us in the fight for our freedom from the British. Little readers will love learning about the first president, from his early childhood to his retirement.

This is a cute little book about the first president of the United States of America. I must point out that this book, though for small children, did not shy away from the fact that George Washington owned slaves. There are a lot of books that introduce kids to George Washington, but very few of them include the ugly truth about the man. Slavery is, and forever will be wrong, but it is a fact that it was a part of our history, and that it was a part of our founding father’s lives.

I also liked that though the book does mention the ugly truths, it doesn’t make it the focus of the book. It addresses different aspects of the man’s life, the good and the bad.

The illustrations in this book are very well done, and they help to greatly tell the story. I like how it depicts the man in the different parts of his life and tries to make him appear more human. I also like how the author and the illustrator both tied it all to our present day and age.

I would recommend this novel to anyone seeking to teach their children about history and the presidents of the United States of America. I received this book from WorthyKids for the sole purpose of providing an honest review and the image featured above is my own.
