Mia and her friends believe in magic. It is because of this belief that the girls are able to make friends with the Star Animals. It is also how they are able to become Star Friends.
What is a Star Friend? A Star Friend is a friend to all living things are they are able to harness the natural magic through their bond with the Star Animals. With this magic, they can help and protect those in their communities and around the world. Most of all they can help protect them from the dark magic in the world.
When Mia meets Bracken, a Star Animal, they instantly bond, and the next day she introduces her friends to the other Star Animals. With their new magic, they must find the source of the bad magic in their area and put a stop to it before someone gets hurt.
I thought this book was quite interesting. My daughter found this book a while ago and absolutely fell in love with it after reading it.
Of course, this book is below my usual reading level, but it was nice reading something filled with magical belief and innocence. The story is well written for the audience and even talks about subjects that our children are faced with today, both in school and in their everyday lives. As we read, we see that the children, the main characters, are having trouble with a classmate and how they feel about this classmate. They also come to the point that they realize that they should be more accepting of others, even if they are annoying.
As for the unique magical interactions between these girls and the animals, there is a real connection communicated in the writing and the abilities the girls quickly develop resemble those that many young children with that they had at one point or another.
The illustrations were strategically placed and were beautiful and helped the reader to develop an idea of the settings and the characters. I thought that they were well placed and that they added to the story.
I would recommend this book to young readers in the third to fifth grades. Especially young ladies who believe in the power of friendship and who love animals.
My daughter bought this book from our local Walmart, and I borrowed her copy to read. The picture below is one I took myself.
